| Tips on how to build dollhouses: All doll house kits come unassembled. If you have a wooden doll house kit that claims it is fast, and quick to finish they are not being honest. Expect small doll houses to take 25-40 hours to fully finish. Big doll houses can take up to 400 hours. Depending on how elaborate you desire your doll house to be, wallpaper, crown moulding, baseboard trim, real wood floors, tile floors, tile ceilings, wainscoting, electric lamps and chandeliers, etc. Basic Doll House Building Supplies Recommended: Pencil, masking tape, sand paper, sharp craft scissors, tacky glue, wood glue, utility knife, small hand saw, various clamps (small, medium, large), long ruler, L form, mitre box, paint brushes, plastic roll, paint (outdoor UV resistant house paint), wood stain, wood filler, and spackle. Hammer, brads, nails <--(for some high end kits only) Your two main types of dollhouse kits are: 1/8th inch thick plywood tab & slot kits, and 3/8th inch thick plywood or MDF kits. 1/8th inch plywood models are plenty sturdy for mature kids and adults, but are more easily broken to the accident prone, and require quite a bit more tedious sanding, wood filler, and spackle. Make sure to heavily sand ALL tab and slot 1/8th plywood kits. The advantages are light weight so if you have a bad back or are elderly these doll houses are extremely easy to lift and move around! They are also much lower cost, but this only applies to the unfinished kits and not finished houses. This is because these kits require as much and in most cases quite a bit more extra work to fully finish! 3/8th inch thick doll houses are extremely sturdy, available in plywood and M.D.F. In this thickness, plywood is stronger but M.D.F. requires the least sanding. These houses are always more expensive, but better quality when it comes to durability. The disadvantages are a medium size house can weigh 35-50 pounds and be very awkward to pick up an move around. Sturdy and heavy can be good for younger children. When building a doll house yourself, consider the company that makes the kit. For instance Real Good Toys, Corona Concepts, and Greenleaf are all well established, reputable dollhouse companies, offering continued support and part replacements if missing or broken. On the other hand a quality doll house company called dura craft went out of business quite some time ago and all the stock got liquidated. These kits are available here and there, so if you get one of these kits and parts are missing or broken, well good luck. The upside to this story is ALL dura craft doll house kits are No Longer Being Made and becoming more Rare and Collectible every day! When sanding dollhouses it is best to start with a LIGHT and QUICK sand on just about every part to be painted. Don't press hard or try to sand anything smooth, yet. Then apply your first coat of paint and sand with a second more intensive sanding. This doll house sanding technique seals the wood better, and most pieces tend to feel rougher after a coat of paint than they did before. Also you will always end up with small little wood particles and pieces here and there on your painted walls and parts. This is why it is good to sand after the first coat of paint. Your second and third coat of paint never have as many of these wood particles, but if necessary sand lightly after your second coat of paint too. The kind of paint I like to use on my doll houses is any quality, latex house paint. (UV resistant preferred ) This way if you set your doll house in front of a window that gets lots of sun, early paint fade should not occur. When painting dollhouses make sure to use at least three coats of paint. Let each coat dry before applying the next coat. This also helps guard against early paint fade. At first it may appear one or two coats will be fine, but the wood doll houses will absorb paint and when dried will give your doll house a slight faded look right away. Three coats of paint will make your colors bright and your whites very white! This goes for Trim Too! Three coats of paint on ALL painted parts! I do not like to use primer colors for my first coats, but prefer to use a white base first coat. I have noticed using a primer color for the first coat will cause me to still need three additional coats if using lighter colors on top. If you use white as a primer first coat this will only enhance any color you use over it and should only require two coats of your final color. Primer paints work fine under darker colors, but not so good under lighter ones. Putting shingles on doll houses is not easy. Mark straight lines across your roof for reference. Start your dollhouse shingles at the bottom edge and go in. Overlap 1/4 inch top of every last row, making sure to cut a half shingle for the roof edges every other row. Work your way up, and keep your lines straight. Also remember gables and fancy roofs require custom cut angles on your shingles. A nice pair of crafting scissors will do the job, yes some shingles will not cut nice, just keep trying. Make sure to use a thick tacky glue, thin runny wood glues will drip and make messes. Outside of sanding, shingles can be the most tedious job when doing any hand crafted doll house kit, taking up to 15-40 hrs alone! Thank you, and God bless! |
